This immersive darkroom workshop is designed for photography enthusiasts who want to learn the traditional process of developing black and white film and printing photographs by hand. Whether you’ve shot with film before or are a digital photographer looking to expand your skills, this hands-on course will guide you through the essential steps of working in a darkroom to create beautiful, handcrafted black and white prints.

Day 1: Introduction to Film Development
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

What you’ll learn:

  • Introduction to Film Types: Overview of different film formats (35mm, 120mm, etc.) and their unique characteristics. Practicing loading and shooting a roll of blank and white film.

  • Understanding Chemicals: Learn about the chemicals involved in film development, including developer, stop bath, and fixer, and how to safely handle and dispose of them.

  • Film Processing Techniques: Step-by-step guidance on loading film onto reels, placing it into a developing tank, and developing the negatives using proper timing and agitation techniques.

  • Drying and Storing Negatives: Techniques for drying film properly and storing negatives for future printing.

By the end of Day 1, you will have, shot and developed your own roll of black and white film and learned how to handle negatives for printing.

Day 2: Printing in the Darkroom
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

The second day will focus on the art of creating prints from your developed negatives. Participants will use an enlarger to project their images onto photographic paper and learn various printing techniques.

What you’ll learn:

  • Darkroom Setup: Understand the equipment used in the darkroom, including enlargers, trays, and safelights, and how to properly set up a darkroom workspace.

  • Making a Contact Sheet: Create a contact sheet to review your negatives and select the best images for larger printing.

  • Printing Techniques: Learn how to use an enlarger to expose photographic paper, control exposure time, and create test strips to achieve the perfect print.

  • Paper Development: Discover the magical process of developing exposed photographic paper using developer, stop bath, and fixer.

  • Contrast and Dodging/Burning: Explore basic techniques for adjusting contrast and selectively lightening or darkening areas of the print (dodging and burning).

  • Final Print Processing and Washing: Properly wash, dry, and store prints to ensure longevity.

By the end of Day 2, you’ll have produced at least one black and white print from your own negatives, as well as gained the foundational skills to continue exploring darkroom printing on your own.

All other equipment and materials will be provided, including film developing chemicals, paper, and darkroom tools.
